![]() They still denied it because the closure was caused by COVID. I put in the claim regardless and said it was because my flight got canceled and the Canadian border is closed. The first thing I was told was that if I put in the claim and it was for COVID related reasons then they are going to deny it because when I got the insurance, COVID was considered an epidemic which means I knew the risks when I bought the flight and that unless I got COVID I wouldnt get my money back. Well when things did get worse and the Canadians shut down the border I tried to put in the claim. I got Allianz in February through AAA for a flight to Canada because even though COVID hadnt really shut anything down in the US, I thought it would just be safe to get it in case things got worse. In normal times, these tickets are generally substantially more expensive than non-refundable tickets, but currently there's a small difference (as you've seen, as low as $100) since demand for airline travel is so depressed and the market is so warped. On the other hand, a refundable/flexible ticket is just that - you can choose any time to get your money back and you don't have to justify it to anyone or provide a reason. (And even the "get sick with COVID" benefit is a temporary limited thing - insurance normally wouldn't even cover it, because COVID is a known event at this point, so the logic is that you if you are booking a ticket today you should be well aware that COVID is a risk.) If you're buying airline tickets to go on a cruise, but your cruise is canceled, Allianz doesn't cover that either, so you can't get your money back in that case either. For example, with Allianz (who I believe is the insurance provider offered by AA) only provides benefits if the traveler actually gets sick with COVID, but doesn't cover if you don't want to travel because you are worried about COVID. to get your money back for your flight if you need to. ![]() Unless it's "cancel for any reason" insurance, travel insurance requires a reason to get benefits, i.e. Check if your destination has a subreddit to find local events, meetups or a travel partner.User created guides / "so you want to go.".View News / Articles Hide News / Articles Where to Go / What to Do It's rude to the people that responded and makes it hard for other people with similar questions to find your post.
